Stalking the "Silent Killer"
Hypertension is called the “silent killer.” Essentially asymptomatic hypertension affects approximately 33% of adult Americans, approximately 20% are unaware of their condition, and it is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. About 71% of those with hypertension use antihypertensive medications. The risk of developing hypertension increases with age. Weight loss alone or in combination with exercise is effective in reducing blood pressure. While lifestyle modifications are successful, many Americans with hypertension will require pharmacological treatment. Those successful at controlling hypertension maintain a healthy lifestyle and take medications as directed.
To provide relevant and updated information on hypertension including prevalence, affect on overall health, risk factors, prevention and treatment. After reading this module, the participant will be able to:
- List three lifestyle modifications that have a favorable effect on blood pressure
- Describe the systolic and diastolic values for hypertension in those 60 years and older and those younger than 60 years
- Describe the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension eating pattern and apply it to the diet of a person with high blood pressure
